At your last visit to the eye doctor, you may have been offered a digital retinal screening in addition to your vision care exam. Though it may be an additional expense, digital retinal screenings can provide incredible insight into your vision health.
What exactly is it? Great question. A digital retinal screening uses imaging technology that scans the eye and produces a roadmap of your interior eye system. The results provide high-resolution, colored images of your retina, optic nerve and blood vessels in the back of the eye.
This newer technology provides your eye doctor an even deeper perspective into what’s happening with your eyes. The results can help indicate signs of serious eye conditions like:
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Glaucoma
- Age-Related Macular Degeneration
- Retinal Vascular Changes
- Retinal Detachment
These concerns can be detected early on before they worsen and are more easily treatable. Additionally, if you have a systemic disease, you can share the images with other specialists so they can better assess your health.
At your next vision care exam, be sure to ask your eye care provider if they offer digital retinal screenings so you can get an even closer look into your eye health.
